Easy DIY Whipped Tallow Balm: What Does Your Skin Eat?
Your skin is your largest organ—what do you feed it?
Did you know your skin can eat as well as the rest of you does on the carnivore diet? Transforming your rendered beef tallow into a luxurious whipped tallow balm is a wonderful way to harness its nourishing properties for skincare. Tallow, especially when sourced from grass-fed cattle, is rich in vitamins A, D, E, and K, closely mimicking the natural composition of our skin’s sebum, making it highly compatible and beneficial.
Here's how to easily make your own DIY whipped tallow balm! You can use it all over from hands or head to toes.
Ingredients
½ cup rendered beef tallow
2 tablespoons liquid oil (such as extra virgin olive oil, almond oil, avocado oil, rosehip seed oil, jojoba oil, or argan oil)
10 drops essential oil (optional, for fragrance and added skin benefits; consider lavender, cedarwood, frankincense, or patchouli)
Instructions
Melt the Tallow. Place the rendered tallow in a double boiler over gentle heat to preserve its beneficial properties. Stir occasionally until fully melted.
Combine with Oils. Remove the melted tallow from heat. Add the chosen liquid oil and essential oils (if using). Stir thoroughly to ensure a uniform mixture.
Cool the Mixture. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature until it begins to solidify but is still soft enough to whip. This may take about 45 minutes, depending on your environment.
Whip the Balm. Using a hand mixer or stand mixer, whip the semi-solid mixture until it achieves a light, airy consistency, similar to whipped cream. This process can take several minutes, so be patient to achieve the desired texture.
Store: Transfer the whipped tallow balm into clean, airtight glass jars. Store in a cool, dry place. The balm can be used as a moisturizer, applied as needed to dry or irritated skin.
Notes
Choosing Liquid Oils: Incorporating a liquid oil helps soften the balm, making it easier to apply. Avoid using oils that are solid at room temperature, like coconut oil, to maintain a spreadable consistency. Before making your first batch, test the liquid oil on a small inconspicuous place on your skin to check for sensitivities.
Essential Oils: While optional, essential oils can enhance the balm’s fragrance and provide additional skin benefits. Ensure you use high-quality, skin-safe essential oils, and perform a patch test with diluted oil to check for any sensitivities.
Storage: The whipped tallow balm is shelf-stable for several months untouched. If you notice any changes in smell or texture, it’s best to make a fresh batch.
In contrast to commercial skincare products that often contain synthetic chemicals and potential toxins, crafting your own whipped tallow balm offers a natural and nourishing alternative. High-quality beef tallow can easily and safely replace toxic ingredients hiding in many commercial skincare products.[1]
By embracing tallow-based carnivor skincare, you can avoid the risks associated with synthetic additives and provide your skin with a product that is both effective and aligned with natural skin biology.
